What are Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions are a popular way through which someone can add volume and length to the hair they currently have. There are a variety of different options that exist as it relates to hair extensions. Some of the more popular hair extension methods are briefly summarized below:

Braids, Cornrows, Twists, Locks: These hair extensions are extremely visible and somewhat obvious because of the style in which they’re presented, but they DO blend into your hair at the attachment point.

Bonding: The hair extensions used in a bonding method have latex plugs that are designed to be affixed to your own hair. This is typically intended for a shorter term length of time. Bonding has a tendency to be fast and cheap. You can get these put on quickly. The bad news is that heat and oil need to be used to slowly dissolve the glue holding everything in place. As you can imagine, this takes time and can create a bit of a mess.

Metal Tubing: This is hard to visualize. But this particular type of extension utilizes small metallic tubes that are stuck on to your natural hair. That’s how the attachments themselves are made. As you can imagine, this method can be risky and sometimes your natural hair is broken off in the process. If you have hair that’s thin or frail, this is probably not the method for you!

Weaves: Tricky to explain, but basically, we’re talking about small little knots or braids that essentially hold everything together. You don’t really see the knots, though! One problem with this type of extension is that it can sometimes be a bit uneven. Also, if you are physically active, you might find that the knots get lose and can come undone. It’s a bit of a hassle to wash your hair too.

Adhesive-Based Fusion: Most experts feel that this is the best way to go, but caution that it’s important that the right adhesive be used to ensure the best results possible. For example, waxy adhesives usually have a much lower melting point that many of the alternatives. Wax-based adhesives can usually withstand both heat and chemical treatments. How do you get these extensions out of your hair? You have to shake some special powder into your hair which heat is then applied to. This is significantly faster and easier than dissolving the bonding agent.

What you really need to keep in mind is that there are a variety of options available to you. The most important consideration is who will be doing your hair extension work. It is very important that you work with somebody who has experience doing this procedure, or at least somebody who is working under the supervision of another person who has had significant amounts of experience with this particular type of hair work. How much you pay will depend on where you live. Another factor to consider is a specific type of hair extension that you will be getting. You can use the above mentioned methods as a very rudimentary guide.

Most of the hair problems are caused due to the chemicals that come from the shampoos & conditioners we use.So avoid non-natural hair conditioning products.

I just saw the coolest thing yesterday while getting my hair dyed. There are apparently these clips you put in your hair and the hair is bright pink, yellow, green, etc. You cannot even tell they are there. Very cool, especially for young girls and halloween!
