How To Care For Your Wig

If you’re somebody who needs to care for a wig, here are a few things that you need to keep in mind. Let’s first begin with the accessories that you will need to actually care for your wig. These include items such as a wig brush, wig comb, wig stand, wig shampoo and conditioner, and various wig styling products.

Generally speaking, it is important that after every 13 to 16 wearings you make an effort to clean your wig. Remove tangles with a wig brush and a spray wig conditioner. Remove shine by applying baby powder to the wig, then shaking excess power loose. Always comb or brush the wig starting at the ends, and not the roots. Store the wig in a closed space, such as a closet, at room temperature and on a wig stand. Use a hair spray formulated especially for wigs to style your wig. To reduce the volume of your wig, spray it with cool water and brush with a wig brush. Remember that it’s best if you do not use any heat source (including a blow dryer, a curling iron or hot rollers) on a synthetic hair wig. You may use these items on a human-hair wig.

Keeping your own hair clean underneath the wig means the wig will need washing less often. Or, use a wig cap to keep your hair from coming into contact with the wig, which also keeps the wig clean. If you feel that your wig needs cutting — or complete restyling — the do-it-yourself approach may not be the best. Take it to a professional wig salon. Make sure your own hair is dry before putting a wig on over it. When cooking with a synthetic wig on, do not open the door to a hot oven, or stand over boiling water or a hot barbecue grill. The heat can damage your wig. Brushing a wig with a regular hairbrush can damage the hair.

Caring for your wig does not really have to take a lot of time or effort. Once you have a basic understanding of the process, it becomes significantly easier to maintain your wig. If you’re not sure about how to do something, do not necessarily take any chances. It is better to speak to a professional who can help guide you then it is to experiment on a wig which cost you money. To the extent you have a friend or family member who knows a lot about wig care, it makes sense to consult with them and to get their advice and opinion regarding what you should be doing when presented with a particularly challenging cleaning problem as it relates to your wig.

Over time, especially if you use your wig a lot, the need may arise to replace your wig. That’s simply the way things go sometimes. You should not necessarily blame yourself or feel as if though you did not do a good enough job caring for your wig. Eventually, regardless of how well you care for your wig, it will have to be replaced.
